چکیده

Studies of cognitive development often find that children’s abilities shift across age and task. The present paper examines an example of such developmental décalage: the same pattern of performance in novel noun generalization occurring at two points in development across forced choice and yes/no tasks. A formal model of these tasks, and an experiment directly comparing performance of children at the same developmental level in each task, demonstrate the importance of understanding how knowledge interacts with the specifics of the task to create behavior and development.

Dumb mechanisms make smart concepts

There is an ongoing debate on the nature of the processes and knowledge involved in learning language. On one side of the debate, people argue that children learn words through deliberative processes that use propositional conceptual knowledge; on the opposing side, people argue that children learn words through automatic processes and knowledge based on learned associations among perceptual fe...

Knowledge in Process 1 Knowledge embedded in process: The self-organization of skilled noun learning

Young children’s skilled generalization of newly learned nouns to new instances has become the battleground for two very different approaches to cognition. This debate is a proxy for a larger dispute in cognitive science and cognitive development: cognition as rule-like amodal propositions, on the one hand, or as embodied, modal, and dynamic processes on the other. After a brief consideration o...

Association of Nouns and Classifiers by Bilingual Children in Mandarin Chinese

This study examines 7-to-12-year-old Singaporean bilingual children’s use of noun classifiers in Mandarin Chinese and their reasoning while making the associations between nouns and classifiers as a given task. The results show that the children made the association by applying their cognitive understanding of the properties and functions of the noun objects, comparing between them, as well as ...

The paradox of relational development: Could language learning be (temporarily) harmful?

Recent studies report a striking decline in children’s ability to notice same-different relations around age 3 (Walker et al., 2015). We propose that such a decline results from an object focus related to children’s avid noun-learning. To test this, we examine children’s performance on a classic relational task – the relational match-to-sample task (RMTS). Prior work has shown that 4-year-olds ...

The Effect of Task Repetition under Different Time Conditions on EFL Learners' Oral Performance and Grammatical Knowledge Gain

This quasi-experimental study aimed to investigate the effect of task repetition under four conditions on the three dimensions of oral production (accuracy, complexity and fluency) and grammatical knowledge gain of learners of English as a Foreign Language (EFL). 40 young learners of English as a Foreign Language in four classes were randomly assigned into one of the following groups: repetitio...
